Clipse
Rappresentano la Virginia al pari di artisti come Missy Elliott, Timbaland o Teddy Riley. La loro storia inizia alla fine degli anni ‘80, con la nascita di Malice (Gene Thornton) e Pusha T (Terrence Thornton) nel Bronx, New York. Risiedono nella Gunhill Road, ascoltando Kool G. Rap, Juice Crew, Eric B & Rakim e Large Professor. Da adolescenti si trasferiscono in Virginia, prima Malice e tre anni dopo Pusha T. Durante una performance, Malice cattura l'attenzione di un certo Pharrell Williams. Stupito dal rapper, Pharrell si propone come produttore per un loro demo tape. Nascono i Clipse. Intanto Pharrell ed il compagno Chad Hugo, meglio conosciuti come Neptunes, acquistano fama tra gli hiphopers e le pop stars come produttori musicali. Aiutano i Clipse a trovare un contratto discografico: per la Elektra Records nel 1999 realizzano il brano "The Funeral". Il singolo fa scalpore nell'underground ed aumenta la già massiccia street-credibility del gruppo, riconosciuto come la rivelazione del terzo millennio. Nel 2000 collaborano con alcuni artisti della No Limit Records (Master P, 504 Boyz e Silkk The Shocker), l'anno seguente partecipano a lavori dei Backstreet Boys, Jermaine Dupri e Nelly Furtado. Dopo aver fatto il loro ingresso all'interno della Star Trak Entertainment, etichetta di produzione dei Neptunes, collaborano con questi ultimi nell'album "In Search Of"; con Kelis nel suo LP "Wanderland", con la Reebok per una campagna pubblicitaria. "Lord Willin'" è il nome dell'LP d'esordio del gruppo, già noto per brani come "When The Last Time", hit da club di notevoli proporzioni, "I'm Serious", "Grindin'", "Hot Damn" e "Ma' I Don't Love Her". Con Baby della Cash Money Records realizzano "What Happened To That Boy", street anthem utilizzato dalla Reebok per uno spot. La controversa label dell' album, uscito nel 2002, li ritrae per le strade del loro quartiere alla guida di una Cadillac. La cosa che salta all'occhio è che sul sedile posteriore è seduto Gesù che osserva il panorama. I Clipse sono un gruppo che bilancia correttamente il rispetto delle strade ed il successo delle charts. Le produzioni, che portano il marchio di fabbrica Neptunes, sono indubbiamente straordinarie ed innovative e variano di molto la linearità del flow dei due MCs della Virginia.
