7L & Esoteric
Stimato gruppo della frangia underground, costituito dall'MC Esoteric e dal DJ e produttore 7L. Le radici del sodalizio sono da ricercarsi nel 1992, quando Esoteric performa come DJ presso uno show di hip hop presso la stazione radio di un college a nord di Boston. 7L ha modo di ascoltare la sua esibizione e lo contatta con il fine di una portare avanti una collaborazione. Immediatamente i due trovano reciproca affinità musicale: adorano entrambi l'hip hop della seconda metà degli anni '80. Come primo progetto registrano insieme "God Complex", uscito nel 1996 ed etichettato come uno degli album più innovativi di quell'anno. Il successo dell'LP si espande a macchia d'olio nel circuito underground, toccando il successo a New York, Los Angeles, Canada ed Europa. La Brick Records, label che ha prodotto l'album, realizza "Rebel Alliance LP", compilation di talenti di Boston in cui spiccano i due, ora conosciutissimi come 7L & Esoteric. A seguire un 12" del brano "Protocol", contenuto nella raccolta. Il brano diventa ben presto un'underground hit e spiana ulteriormente la strada al duo: 7L & Esoteric vengono ospitati nello show radiofonico newyorkese di Stretch e Bobbito. Nel 1998 vede la luce "Def Rhymes", singolo che sale al primo posto tra i successi underground. Il brano attira l'attenzione della rivista musicale "The Source" e del "Wake Up Show" dei produttori Sway & Tech. A cavallo tra il 1999 ed il 2000 il gruppo realizza un featuring con Inspectah Deck del Wu Tang Clan. Il 2001 è l'anno di uscita di "The Soul Purpose", LP che riceve, nella categoria Best Hip Hop Album, il Boston Music Award di quell'anno. Al termine di un inaspettato tour negli USA e in Europa, nell'autunno del 2002 il gruppo produce "Dangerous Connection". La street-credibility da loro acquisita li porta a collaborare, per questo progetto, con gruppi del calibro di J-Live, Kut Masta Kurt e Jedi Mind Tricks: personaggi in vista nell'underground statunitense. Esoteric collabora ad un album dei Jedi Mind Tricks, 7L produce beats per Havoc dei Mobb Deep e Tragedy Khadafi, Outerspace, Main Flow, Shabazz The Disciple. Nella primavera del 2004 vede la luce "DC2: Bars Of Death". Ormai arrivati alla completa maturità, il flow deciso e scandito di Esoteric scatta senza troppe pretese metriche o esagerate sperimentazioni sulle strumentali di 7L, in cui una linea di basso sopra un equilibrato cassa-rullante fa da piano d'appoggio ai campioni, armonizzati ma custodi di una gradevole crudezza di suono. Molte le collaborazioni, fornite anche dagli agganci dell'etichetta Babygrande dei Jedi Mind Tricks. Collaborano con il rapper e produttore J-Zone e con Vinnie Paz, Outerspace, King Syze, Apathy Celph-Titled, Rise, MainFlow, Beyonder, KT & Uno The Prophet.
